Darkness
Jim is a bored office worker who goes to work in the same grey suit to the same grey cubicle in the same grey building everyday. Sometimes it’s just him in the office working long hours. Today was like any other day. Jim stays behind to finish work, seeming to work after hours but that is not the case. Ready to leave for the day, Jim grabs his coat and takes 3 steps toward the door. He stops in his steps because he can hear no sounds. He stomps his feet, noticing no noise from his footsteps and sees a voided darkness. Walking over to the window he saw nothing but a bottomless pit with no edges.
Realizing what he saw, fear grew within his chest. Jim ran over to the stairwell doorway but this footsteps made no sound. All of a sudden the TV turned on. There was nothing but a hiss of static bouncing off the walls. Jim hurried through the doorway and into a room that was not to be there. This new room was made of grey concrete with disrepair hallways branching off to the sides. Jim acknowledged this room should not exist. His office was gone! There were only dark hallways. Jim began to walk down this hallway quickening his pace. There was an eerie light shining dimly from the lamps which emitted a dim eerie haze of light. As Jim traveled down the hallway he realized the light began to fade.
Jim stopped, he felt a foreboding dread. The sound of footsteps in front of him began echoing down the hallway. Jim slowly let out a whimpering “hello." He was greeted by silence. Whatever was down that hall began sprinting towards him. Jim, born with a primordial need to survive, bolted in the opposite direction. He ran through the middle hallway until he reached a point where his legs could barely carry him. He ran until he came onto a cliff that he nearly fell off. The cliff had a drop into the edge of nothingness.
Then he heard whatever it was closing in on him. The footsteps began sprinting at him. Jim jumped into the pitch black emptiness. Time melted into nothingness and the ink black darkness surrounded Jim. He fell for an eternity with no sound in his ears. Jim heard a voice calling his name, “Jim… Jim....” The voice grew louder and suddenly Jim jolted awake. He was sleeping at his desk.
As everyone left and the office emptied Jim looked around at his gray office space. Nothing changed. As he got up to leave he looked out the window and noticed there was nothing but darkness. Then he walked to the door and his footsteps made no sound. Jim had the eerie feeling that this happened before. As he looked down to the exit door, he saw through the doorway a darkness that beckoned to him. Jim knew at that instant, this would be his eternity.
