28 - Them
I took a deep breath as I stopped running. I knew stopping would allow them to catch up but I couldn’t breathe and I couldn’t feel my legs any longer. As I breathed out, I could see my breath in the freezing January weather. After I caught my breath a minute later, I realized something stomach dropping. It was dead silent. No birds, no wind, nothing. I whipped my head around in circles waiting for something to pop out. I hear their voices coming closer so I duck behind a tree and cover my mouth with my hand. I know they still have Lila because I can hear her crying. I hear them throw Lila onto the ground with a thud and a sad yelp. My heart breaks. We had time to bond while they kept us under the floorboards for a long time that neither one of us know for sure. I hear the bigger guy say, “Yo dude we gotta get the other chick we gotta just kill this one and find the other one.” The smaller guy replies, “Bro no way she got far she’s definitely around here somewhere.” He yelled the last part for emphasis and it sent a chill down my spine. The big guy makes a noise something like “eh” and I hear a deafening crunch that definitely wasn’t the leaves. I stifled a scream as I hear Lila’s final scream. I hear the two guys leave to go find me in the opposite way. I break into crying when I know their gone. I run to Lila and I grab her and cry into her. Crunch. Everything stops. My breathing and my tears stop at once hoping and pleading that the crunch isn’t what it is. As I’m turning around slowly I hear, “Haha aye you were right dude.” As I meet eyes with the man who took me away from my family, friends, and life to torture me every night.
